I've committed myself to posting if I have a binge episode, so that I can continue to understand why this happens. I'm actually very excited that I've found that there IS a connection here...a reason that I'm doing this....so that I can substitute other behaviors besides heading for food.
It is 3:59 a.m. I got up because Gizzy needed to go outside. The heater was on high and it had gotten pretty hot. After I let Gizz out, I opened the frig--something I seem to always do when I'm in the kitchen. (I'm going to try not opening the frig unless I'm going in there to fix a meal or snack--period.) I spotted the Healthy Choice ice cream bars, and had one--wrote it down. Now what I would have liked to have done---what would have been better--was to have had some water or a drink. I believe I was just thirsty and too warm. Got back up again for Gizz a few minutes later and then had another bar and then another--that's when the binge behavior started.
The "binge talk" in my head:
1. Might as well finish off the whole box so that they won't be there to tempt me.
2. I'll write it down and count the points. It's OK if I do that.
3. At least it's low-point ice cream.
4. Well, I was hot!
5. Maybe it will help me get back to sleep.
Now, the "Rational Talk":
#1: Would have been just as easy to throw the whole box away if it was going to tempt you. Yes, a loss of money, but a gain of self-control.
#2: It is STILL binge behavior, which I'm trying to control. It could be 1 point or 10 points---doesn't matter.
#3: Food is food when it comes to bingeing.
#4: Water would have done nicely, or cold soda, or even ice. Maybe not as interesting or feel as good in my mouth as ice cream, but it wasn't a planned snack, and I'm getting away from that.
#5: It has sugar in it, and the taste wakes your senses up--not a good plan to get back to sleep.
We're going to get a handle on this thing, and I'm pumped!! Now back to sleep.
Until next time, take one day at a time.
Love, Katie
